How do we begin to describe our relationship to a place when that place means nothing to someone else? How do we explain that special feeling that sits deep inside, churning, yearning, that makes us return to it year after year – a feeling that makes you grounded in a place and wrapped in its details? When I came across a set of 300 slides taken by my grandfather dating back to 1969 in Gulf Shores, Alabama, a place my family has vacationed and been rooted in for 49 years, I began to think about what it means to come and go from this place, watch it change as we change, but continue to hold the same place in my family’s heart. I sought out to understand my own relationship Gulf Shores as being shaped by its past, present, and future and the magic of its fine details that like its tides, pull me in physically and emotionally.
